Stop Kiss

Directing
Stop Kiss

One of Evelyn's objectives is to elevate the voices and narratives of the LGBTQ+ community. She rarely saw herself portrayed in plays as a member of the community and always felt it was her duty to develop such stories. Some of her goals as a director included; making sure her cast felt comfortable in their roles and with the overall plot, making sure that her actors understood its intent: love is sometimes uncontrollable and just happens. Not disregarding the play, she had a thorough discussion with her cast and crew about; the meaning of words, the damage that it can cause someone and the importance of the play to the LGBTQ+ community. Evelyn wanted to make this play her own and added elements of pantomime for certain scenes, making the audience concentrated on the nature of Callie and Sara’s love story. Evelyn gained knowledge of a variety of subjects, including communication, accountability, LGBTQ history, and intimacy scene direction.

Inspirations and more

Stop Kiss was the first play that Evelyn had read where she saw herself being represented and knew she had to serve its justice during the directing process. One of the biggest discovery she had was the importance of the color and plant lavender to the LGBTQ+ community. Certain aspects like lighting, costume and set design was were inspired by that history. At the end of the play both Callie and Sara's color palette become united just like their relationship, this is shown when both are wearing lavender at the end. Callie wears more sunset colors showing her fun and free personality while Sara wears more neutral colors showing the barriers and self discovery she's been looking for. Their journey is also represented in the setting and lighting. At the beginning of the show Callie's apartment is messy, cold, and out place. Once she meets Sara, her apartment turns into a place where memories are creative in an open space, warm place, and full of lavender. These aspects were all very important when directing this production. She also created a playlist for the cast to understand the aura, vibes and aesthetic of the production.
